Off the Beaten Track: Home of the Violin Cremona, Lombardy, Northern Italy
Posted on 17 July 2016
Cremona, a beautiful medieval city in Northern Italy, is the home of violin making .....
The city where Amati invented the prototype modern violin in 1566 and Guarneri and Stadivari created a golden age of violin making. Today, 50 violin makers, or liutai as they are called, keep up the tradition using similar methods. Book yourself on a local tour www.toursbylocals.com/CremonaViolinTour Do not forget to visit the amazing collection of old violins at www.museodelviolino.org, the earliest dating from 1566.
There is lot more to to see and do in this beautiful city.
In the heart of the city, at the Palazzo Comunale, there is a Duomo of Cremona; is countered one of the masterpieces of Lombardy buildings. Be sure also to wander through the wonderful old cathedral and climb to the top of the Torrazzo, the bell tower of the Cathedral, for stunning views of the city; at 112.7 meters (343 ft 6 in), it is the third tallest brickwork bell tower in the world.
Dining is easy, with wonderful restaurants around the square, and nestled in the little cobbled side streets - all serving traditional Italian food.
The City recently opened a new concert hall, in the shape of, you guessed it, a violin. www.stradivarifestival.it Concert Season is 24 September – 9 October 2016
